Tone mapping — the processing applied by HDR software in default settings — creates dramatic tonal contrast, hyper-detailed shadows, and an obviously artificial appearance. This aesthetic is now strongly associated with low-quality property marketing and should be avoided.
Natural HDR blending is invisible — the blended image looks like a perfectly exposed photograph taken with a camera that could capture the full dynamic range in a single shot. Achieve this using Lightroom's HDR Merge with tone mapping disabled, or manual blending in Photoshop using luminosity masks.
Manual luminosity masking produces the highest quality HDR blends. This workflow creates luminosity mask selections based on image brightness, blending specifically the window areas from underexposed frames and shadow areas from overexposed frames, leaving the correctly exposed frame as the foundation of the image.
Window Pulls: Achieving Natural Windows
Blown-out windows — overexposed to pure white with no exterior detail — are the most common complaint about amateur real estate editing. A proper window pull replaces overexposed white areas with a naturally exposed view of the exterior, creating windows that look as they would to the human eye standing in the room.
The process requires a dedicated window frame: an exposure set specifically for the exterior view through the windows, typically 3–5 stops underexposed from the ambient interior frame. In this frame the room interior is very dark, but the exterior is correctly exposed with visible sky, garden, and neighbourhood detail.
Blend the window frame into the ambient interior frame using a window mask that targets only the overexposed window areas for replacement. Photoshop's Select and Mask feature combined with a Luminosity mask targets these areas most precisely, with manual brush refinement for any edges that need additional adjustment.
When to Outsource HDR Blending
For photographers shooting more than two properties per day, in-house HDR blending quickly becomes the binding constraint on business growth. A 30-image shoot requires 4–7.5 hours of editing at 8–15 minutes per image. Outsourcing this work to a specialist service recovers this time for additional bookings.
Oval Infotech accepts your raw bracket files and returns professionally blended, colour-corrected images within 24 hours. Our editors blend manually in Photoshop rather than using automated HDR software, producing natural, photorealistic results that meet the highest professional standards.
Standard HDR blending is priced at $0.40 per image. A free trial of 5 blended images is available for new clients — submit your most challenging brackets to evaluate quality before placing a volume order.
