A professional real estate photography checklist is the difference between a rushed, incomplete shoot and a consistent, profitable property photography business. Experienced real estate photographers develop systematic workflows that ensure every property is shot to the same high standard — regardless of the property's size, condition, or the time pressure on shoot day.

Pre-Shoot Preparation Checklist

  • Review the property listing — Understand the number of rooms, key features, and any specific agent requests before arriving
  • Charge all batteries and clear memory cards — Never arrive with less than 2 full batteries and 32GB+ of free card space
  • Prepare exposure brackets — Set your camera for 3 or 5-bracket auto-exposure bracketing at ±2EV for HDR blending
  • Contact the agent or homeowner — Confirm the property will be prepared (tidied, lights on, cars moved, bins out of sight)
  • Check the weather — Overcast days work well for interiors; sunny days are preferred for exteriors

Exterior Shots Checklist

  • Front elevation — straight-on and 3/4 angle
  • Rear garden / backyard / patio
  • Aerial drone shot (if available)
  • Street approach shot
  • Any outbuildings, garages, or special features
  • Pool or outdoor entertaining areas

Interior Shots Checklist

  • Living room — 2 angles minimum
  • Kitchen — straight-on and cooking area angle
  • Master bedroom — 2 angles
  • All additional bedrooms
  • Bathrooms — each bathroom at least 1 shot
  • Dining room or open-plan dining area
  • Home office (increasingly important)
  • Staircase and hallway details
  • Any architectural detail shots (fireplace, built-ins, views)

Equipment Checklist

1

Camera and Wide-Angle Lens

Minimum 16–24mm equivalent for interior photography. Ultra-wide for tight spaces.

2

Tripod

Essential for consistent exposure brackets and sharp images in low light.

3

Speedlight or Flash

For flambient technique — dramatically improves interior quality over HDR alone.

4

Diffuser or Bounce Card

For softening flash and creating more natural, even lighting.

5

Laptop or Mobile Device

For reviewing images on-site and confirming coverage before leaving.

Post-Shoot Workflow

  1. Back up all raw files to two locations before editing
  2. Upload to your editing partner (Oval Infotech) via Dropbox or Google Drive
